For our first collaborative project you will be working in pairs to design a wallet that maps a site on 14th Street. Using our class-wide map as a starting point you and your partner will discuss various ways to approach this project. What information will you choose to include? What information gets left out? How do needs and desires collide on 14th Street? How might the form of the wallet unfold to reveal a map? Through this project you will consider how people economically navigate the city and how a wallet might inform that process.
Process
Get to know a bit about your partner
Discuss ideas / sites of interest along 14th Street
Conduct a site visit along 14th Street and decide on a location
Research that location – look, listen, touch, smell, taste, draw + photograph your site; ask questions of people around you; read about the site in books and articles; collect materials from the site; explore the site in found images
Work with your partner to create a mood board based on your research. The mood board can contain any of the research materials listed above. Here are some examples of mood boards for inspiration:
Work with your partner to develop three concept sketches of a wallet that maps your site on 14th Street. In order to have three concept sketches ready to present you should generate many more possibilities in your sketchbook and then narrow them down. Each concept sketch should have two views, one of the wallet closed and one of the wallet open. Concept sketches should be done in Micron pen on 8.5 x 11” drawing paper (*be sure the paper can be removed from your sketchbook if you are using sketchbook paper)
Homework due next class, 9.23:
- Mood Board (completed on 20" x 30" Illustration Board)
- 3 Concept Sketches (completed in Micron pen on 8.5" x 11" drawing paper - must be loose paper or able to be removed from sketchbook)
- Zine - 2 bound copies + 4 photocopied pages (unbound)
