Homework due Thursday 9.16: Obsessive / Consumption Zine

Project 1: Obsessive / Consumption

A zine based on the work of artist Kate Bingaman-Burt (http://katebingamanburt.com)

For this project you’ll be creating a pocket-sized zine that documents EVERYTHING (and we mean EVERYTHING) you buy for seven days.

How? Each day will occupy two pages in the zine and there will be front and back covers as well. You will record your purchases as simple line drawings using Micron Archival Ink Pens (See example above).

Materials:

Micron Archival Ink Pens – Black at various thicknesses (.005, .01, .03, .05) Try them out and get a few that you like to work with. Color Microns are optional but great too!

At least ten pieces of 8.5” x 11” computer paper

Glue stick

Scissors

Ruler- 24” metal edge

X-Acto Knife

Long Arm Stapler

This project will have four parts so follow directions carefully:

Part 1: Fold Zine Template + Record Page Numbers

Part 2: Draw, Draw, Draw

Part 3: Glue Your Drawings Into the Zine Template (NOTE** Do not fold or bind yet!!!)

Part 4: Make Copies

Part 1 Fold Zine Template + Record Page Numbers

1. You will start with two sheets of 8.5” x 11” computer paper. Fold each sheet into quarters. Unfold the sheets and lay them out them out together.

2. Once the sheets are laid out record the page numbers lightly in pencil. This is called pagination and will help you determine the order of your pages.

3. Turn the pages over and lightly record numbers on the back. Page 1 will be on the back of the cover, page 3 will be on the back of page 2. Page 4 will be on the back of page 5, page 11 on the back of page 10. Once completed, set the template aside until you’re ready to glue in your drawings. ** You will not draw directly on the template.

Part 2: Draw, Draw, Draw!
For this project you will draw EVERYTHING that you buy for a week. No shortcuts! We are looking for a simple line drawing of each item in the style of artist, Kate Bingaman Burt. Pay attention to what you can do with simple line drawings: hatching, patterns, working with line weight, etc.

Each day of the week will be given two pages in the zine.

Day 1: pages 1 and 2

Day 2: pages 3 and 4

Day 3: pages 5 and 6

Day 4: pages 7 and 8

Day 5: pages 9 and 10

Day 6: pages 11 and 12

Day 7: pages 13 and 14

VERY IMPORTANT: BEFORE YOU START DRAWING***

Rather than draw directly on the template you will draw on small pieces of paper that will then get glued into place. Each piece of paper should measure approximately 5” x 3.75” to allow for a .25” margin all around. Before you draw, cut 16 small sheets (measuring 5” x 3.75” each). As you draw you may want to record the date on the back of the drawing in pencil so that you know where to position it on the template later.

DON’T FORGET THE COVER PAGE! (Back cover optional)

Your cover should include: Title: Obsessive-Consumption, A zine based on the work of artist Kate Bingaman-Burt, Your Name, Parsons Lab Fall 2010

Think about how you can play with the text here. How can the text relate to the contents inside? Once your drawings and cover page are done, move to PART III: Gluing your drawings into the zine template.

Part 3: Gluing your drawings into the zine template
When you’ve completed your drawings, order them according to day and then use your glue stick to adhere them to the template. Be sure that your drawings match up with the proper pages. Pages 1 and 2 may not be next to each other in the template but the order will make sense once we bind next week.

Part 4: Make copies

Once your drawings are glued into the template it’s time to go to the copy shop. You should have two 8.5” x 11” pages covered in drawings from front to back. Request 10 double sided copies so that the copied pages correspond to the physical templates.

Come to class on 9.16 with the zine template (drawings glued in) and all 10 copies.
