14th Street Length: 2.00 mi (3 km) Location: New York West end: West Side Highway East end: Avenue C

• Every block in New York City seems to have a distinctive personality. Just imagine if you take on to experience an entire Street from East to West in the island of Manhattan, I wonder about the sounds, images, architecture, diversity of communities, businesses, schools, cultural institutions, groceries, trendy stores…. the list seems endless.

• The experience can go further than just seeing, opening up to all our senses will unveil so much as the unseen personality of 14Th Street.

• Also think about ordinary everyday experiences with this location, what do you buy there?? What do you wish to buy?? Do you pass or cross by often?? Do you have a special memory?? Have you encountered a friend? Have you walked to the subway that way??Through walking 14th Street, West to East, we would like you to document, by listing, photographing, videotaping, or drawing this journey.

• This exercise combined with the Obsessive Consumption exercise will warm you up for o “the 14th Street wallet project”.

• This project intents to engage in the form of a wallet, ideas about desire, public/private, collective/personal memory, history, diversity, and the economic navigation of 14th St.

Think about the form of a wallet, it opens and shuts, it can be deconstructed, folded, transformed like a map!

Please come into class on 9/16 with the 10 most interesting photos images (printed out at the print center) of your 14th Street journey.
